Past a varied landscape to the most beautiful lakes

Difficulty Level:
Duration: 8 days
Distance: ca. 375 km
Landscape:

The Carinthia Lakes roundtrip is a 375 km long cycle tour to the most beautiful lakes of Carinthia. Past blue and turquoise lakes, accompanied by a hilly and mountainous landscape, the route fascinates with a varied landscape. The Mediterranean influence in the south of Austria makes cycling a pleasure from April to October. The original tour is a cycle tour for sporty, more ambitious and experienced cyclists

Cyclist with a couple of slopes to overcome and partially leading several kilometers along paved roads with some traffic. The cycle tour takes you from Villach, the cycling capital of Carinthia, to Lake Millstätter See, Lake Weißensee, Lake Pressegger See, Lake Faaker See and via the Keutschacher Seental with 4 lakes to the provincial capital of Klagenfurt and to Lake Klopeiner See.
This tour leads mostly on well laid out bicycle routes, often directly along the lakesides. In some sections the route leads along federal roads without a cycle path. In addition, there is a long slope on the route to Weißensee to overcome (transfer optional). The rest of the route is mainly flat, sometimes slightly hilly. The route is ideal for E-bikes.

TRAVEL ITINERARY

8 days / 7 nights

Day 1

You will arrive at your hotel in Villach. Parking spaces available close to the hotel.

Day 2

(approx. 60 km)

You start in Villach and through the small town the way leads out in the direction of Lake Faaker See, the emerald

among the Carinthian lakes, not very big, but very warm and turquoise like the Caribbean. You will circumnavigate

the lake from south to east and then drive along the Drau cycle path and over the Wörthersee north shore to

Klagenfurt.

Day 3

(approx. 80 km)

In the morning you start in Klagenfurt and cycle on a flat route towards Lake Klopeiner See. Do not miss a ride around the lake before continuing along the Drau cycle path directly on the water, crossing untouched nature until the final destination of this stage.

Day 4

(approx. 60 km)

The first section follows the Drau cycle path, a quite pleasant start, mostly along the river. Before you reach Villach you turn to the lake Ossiacher See and initially follow the creek. Soon you will notice the castle ruin of Landskron, dominating the valley below. Surrounded by the idyllic mountain scenery, you will come across inviting bathing resorts and the romantic Ossiach monastery. The dark green colour of the lake water is really special. From the lake Ossiacher See you cycle a short distance along the Drau cycle path upriver to your destination Villach.

Day 5

(approx. 60 km)

In the morning the bike tour takes you again out of Villach and into the vicinity of lake Ossiach. You then change onto the cycle path in the direction of lake Millstätter See, which leads through the so-called Gegendtal valley past the two small idyllic lakes Afritzer See and Brennsee and the small town of Radenthein to the eastern shore of lake Millstätter See. After that there are a few more kilometers directly along the lake to reach today‘s destination Millstatt.

Day 6

(approx. 60 km )

You start at lake Millstätter See and continue through the Lieserschlucht gorge to the district town of Spittal an der Drau with it’s beautiful renaissance castle of Porcia. Then follow the Drau cycle path downstream and continue on the federal road up to the lake Weißensee (transfer optional). Once you reach the top, you cross over by boat, as there is no road connection to the eastern shore. There you start with a short slope before turning downhill again along the dreamy Gitschtal valley, to the small town of Hermagor and then to Lake Pressegger.

Day 7

(approx. 55 km)

Your bike tour will take you along the Gailtal cycle path. The wide valley is mainly untouched and the cycle path crosses the natural landscape along the river. At the beginning of this trip, you pass the lake Pressegger See. Like all Carinthian lakes, it is a bathing lake with warm temperatures. Before reaching Villach, part of the trip leads through a nature reserve at the foot of the majestic Dobratsch Mountain, formed by a gigantic historic landslide. You cycle directly along the Gail River, which is wide and flat at this point - an inviting bathing place for many nature lovers.

Day 8

Tour end and departure or possibility of extension.
