Itinerary

Day 1 Chiemsee

Individual arrival at the first hotel in Chiemsee. The „Bavarian Sea“ is the largest lake in Bavaria and is famous for its natural scenery, water sports and cultural activities.

Day 2 Lake Chiemsee – St. Johann in Tirol

(approx. 55 km)

The first stage leads you to the „Bavarian Sea“, the picturesquely situated Chiemsee with its scenic and varied landscapes, a true leisure paradise with plenty of activities to chose from. At the end of the route you reach the baroque town of St. Johann in Tyrol, the lively heart of the region between the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Wilder Kaiser.

Day 3 St. Johann in Tirol – Zell am See

(approx. 55 km)

Hochfilzen is the first interesting stop for today. Every biathlon fan will be familiar with this town, as World Cup races are held here every year in front of thousands of spectators. The route continues to Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, the third largest town in the province of Salzburg with its typically Austrian centre. The stage destination is Zell am See, on a peninsula on the shore of Lake Zell in the immediate vicinity of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier.

Day 4 Zell am See – Matrei in Osttirol

(approx. 60 km + transfer Felbertauern Straße)

On the Tauern Cycle Path you continue towards Mittersill. The Tauern Cycle Path is a paradise for cyclists of all ages. The imposing peaks of the Hohe Tauern Mountains greet you in the south - fortunately you don‘t have to cross them at the top! A transfer takes you right into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park before you cycle mostly downhill from the Matreier Tauernhaus to Matrei in East Tyrol.

Day 5 Matrei in Osttirol – Oberdrauburg/Kötschach-Mauthen

(approx. 65 km)

The cycle path leads through the idyllic Iseltal valley to the sunny town of Lienz in the very south of Austria near the Italian border, on the sunny slopes of the Alps where they live the „Dolce Vita“ style. In Lienz you turn off onto the well-known Drau cycle path to Oberdrauburg. You will soon overcame the last hurdle before Kötschach-Mauthen, the gently ascending road to the Gailberg Pass.

A transfer in a minibus over the Gailbergsattel can also be booked on request.

Day 6 Oberdrauburg/Kötschach-Mauthen – Tolmezzo/Venzone

(approx. 55 km)

A transfer takes you in the morning to the Plöcken Pass, the border to Italy. Along numerous serpentines you cycle down the pass road to Paluzza. Here every racing cyclist‘s heart would beat faster! Passing the thermal baths in Arta and the Roman excavation sites of Zuglio, you reach the medieval Venzone via Tolmezzo, which had to be rebuilt after the devastating earthquake, nowadays named in the most beautiful Italian villages list.

Day 7 Tolmezzo/Venzone – Spilimbergo

(approx. 50 km)

A few kilometres after Venzone you reach Osoppo with its fortress steeped in history which has its origins in the Middle Ages. The next interesting point on the day‘s programme is not long in coming: San Daniele del Friuli, home of the famous air-dried ham. At Ragogna you cross the Tagliamento river and finally reach Spilimbergo, entitled “city of art and mosaic birthplace” as it is the home to a particular mosaic School which is internationally famous.

Day 8 Spilimbergo – Lignano

(approx. 70 km)

Strenuous climbs are far from you. With the „fiume Tagliamento“ as your constant companion you cycle through the Friulian countryside towards the sea. The river was the scene of merciless battles during World War I and flows into the Adriatic Sea at Lignano; on the endless sandy beaches you can review your exciting trip.

Day 9 Lignano

Individual departure from Lignano or possibility to extend your stay.
