The European long-distance hiking trail E5 crosses the Alps from north to south. The hiking trail runs from Constance on Lake Constance to Verona. It has an approximate length of 600 kilometers and crosses several countries – including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

Day 1: Arrival
Individual arrival in Bolzano
Day 2: Bolzano - Meltina
(ascent approx. 480 m, descent approx. 420 m / approx. 4.5 hours)
In the morning, take a bus ride to San Genesio and experience South Tyrol at its most beautiful. A unique panoramic view from Lake Kaltern over the castles and palaces of the Wine Route to the rugged rocks of the Dolomites awaits you. Your hike takes you across wide meadows with horses and cows and through sparse forests with ancient larch trees to the village of Meltina on the high plateau of the Tschöggelberg.
Day 3: Circular hike around Meltina
(ascent approx. 610 m, descent approx. 910 m / approx. 4 hours)
The picturesque village of Meltina, at over 1,100 m, is surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery. Flower-covered meadows, fragrant larch forests, and alpine pastures lead up to the “Steinernen Mandln,” where you can enjoy a magnificent mountain view of the Rosengarten and many other impressive mountain peaks. This wonderful circular tour also includes a leisurely stop at the rustic hut at Möltner Kaser with a tasting of traditional dumpling specialties.
Day 4: Meltina - Merano
(ascent approx. 600 m, descent approx. 450 m / approx. 5 hours)
Your final stage takes you through magnificent meadows and forests to the “Knottnkino,” three spectacular open-air stages with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Adige Valley. From the rocky peaks of the Knottn, the route continues to Hafling, home to the famous horse breed. A short bus ride takes you down to Merano, where it is worth visiting the magnificent gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle before walking into the center in the footsteps of Empress Sissi.

By car: via the Brenner highway (A22) to Merano or via the Felbertauern road to Lienz in East Tyrol, over the Austrian-Italian border and then on the SS49 through the Pustertal valley to Merano

By plane: The nearest airports are Innsbruck (approx. 83 km), Verona Villafranca (approx. 191 km), Treviso (approx. 228 km), Venice Marco Polo (approx. 313 km).
