The Lake Constance – Königssee Cycle Route follows the northern edge of the Alps throughout its entire length. The route crosses the Allgäu, Bavarian Swabia, and Upper Bavaria. Along the way, small villages alternate with traditional spa towns and health resorts.
The starting point of the Lake Constance – Königssee Cycle Route, between the two lakes, is Lindau. From here, the route heads into the rolling hills of the Allgäu. After enjoying unforgettable views of the Allgäu Alps, the Zugspitze, and the Tannheim Mountains, you reach Hohenschwangau, where you can admire what is probably Germany’s most famous postcard image: Neuschwanstein Castle, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
The Wieskirche is another must-see attraction. Located slightly off the route near Steingaden, this magnificent church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In Benediktbeuern, the Benedictine monastery, with its more than 1,250 years of history, is well worth a visit. The cycle route then reaches Bad Tölz on the River Isar. Through the picture-perfect landscapes of Upper Bavaria, the route continues to Lake Tegernsee, Lake Schliersee, and finally Lake Chiemsee, for which it is worth allowing some extra time.
A boat trip takes you to Fraueninsel. After exploring the island, you can continue by boat to Herreninsel, where another magnificent palace from the time of King Ludwig II awaits you.
Via Traunstein, the route continues to Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden. The journey ends in the heart of the alpine landscape of Berchtesgaden National Park.
Königssee is truly a magnificent and regal finale to this unforgettable cycling journey.

From Lindau on Lake Constance, the route initially follows the Leiblach River, which also marks the border with Austria, before climbing into the rolling hills of the Allgäu. The landscape is characterised by farmhouses scattered among forests and meadows, together with small villages along the route. Passing through Hergenweiler, Maria-Thann and Röthenbach, the first stage finally reaches Oberstaufen.
The second stage starts in Oberstaufen and takes you around Staufner Berg (1,032 m). Following the Konstanzer Ach valley, the route leads to Großer Alpsee and continues past Kleiner Alpsee to Immenstadt. The route then heads south along the Iller Cycle Path to Sonthofen, where you cross the River Iller. From here, you continue north again, passing Agathazeller Moos, located about 4 km north of Sonthofen, before reaching Rettenberg, at the foot of the Grünten massif, with the Übelhorn, rising to 1,730 m. From Rettenberg, the route continues steadily uphill, passing the Rottach Reservoir and Memersch, which, at an altitude of 1,000 m above sea level, is the highest point of the entire Lake Constance – Königssee Cycle Route. The route then continues through Oy-Mittelberg and Maria Rain to Nesselwang, at the foot of Edelsberg (1,629 m) and Alpspitze (1,575 m). From Nesselwang, with magnificent views of the Allgäu Alps, the Zugspitze, and the Tannheim Mountains, the route winds through forests and fields, passing small villages on the way to Hopfen am See and finally Füssen.
Starting from Hopfen am See or Füssen, the route passes through Hohenschwangau and by Neuschwanstein Castle. In addition to Lake Forggensee and Lake Bannwaldsee, the area is home to seven large lakes and numerous smaller ones. The highest mountains are Säuling (2,047 m) and Tegelberg (1,880 m), which can also be reached by cable car. Tucked away in a unique mountain setting are Schwansee and Alpsee. After passing through Schwangau, the route follows Lake Bannwaldsee to Trauchgau. From Trauchgau, the journey continues along farm tracks and small country roads, passing the Wieskirche and Wildsteig, before entering the Halbammer Valley and descending to Altenau. From Altenau, the route follows the Altenauer Moor Nature Reserve, continuing via Saulgrub to Bad Kohlgrub. From Bad Kohlgrub, the route continues downhill to Grafenaschau, at the foot of the Aschau Mountains, following the Murnauer Moos and Eschenloher Moos Nature Reserves.
The fourth stage leads from Eschenlohe with almost no climbs, following the Loisach River several times and passing the Schwaiganger State Stud, the largest horse breeding farm in Bavaria, before reaching Kochel am See. Lake Kochel lies at the foot of the 1,731-metre-high Herzogstand, behind which lies Lake Walchensee, located 200 metres higher. The route continues on flat terrain at the foot of the mountains, passing through the wet meadows of the Loisach marshes to Benediktbeuern, with views of the Benediktenwand (1,800 m). After passing Bad Heilbrunn, the route continues between Blomberg (1,248 m) and Stallauer Weiher, before reaching Bad Tölz on the banks of the Isar River.
The fifth stage leads from Bad Tölz along country lanes and quiet secondary roads, with gentle ups and downs, to Greiling, Reichersbeuern and through Waakirchen. From here, the route continues to Gmund am Tegernsee and, via Hausham and Schliersee, reaches Fischbachau. The route then continues around the Wendelstein (1,838 m) and the mountains surrounding it, passing through forests and fields before descending into the Mangfall plain and continuing to the Rosenheim region.
From here, the route continues gently downhill through the Moos marshland area to Neubeuern / Altenmarkt am Inn. From Altenmarkt, the route climbs gently via Rohrdorf and shortly afterwards follows the A8 motorway to Frasdorf. From here, it is not far to Aschau im Chiemgau. The route then descends gently to Bernau, situated at the foot of the Kampenwand (1,668 m) at the southwestern end of Lake Chiemsee. Without any major climbs, the stage continues between the Hochfelln (1,664 m) and Hochgern (1,633 m) mountains and the marshlands bordering Lake Chiemsee, passing through Grassau to the town of Bergen. Between Bergen and Siegsdorf, there is one more short climb to overcome.
The final stage is one of the more leisurely ones. From Siegsdorf, the route initially follows the Traun River all the way to Traunstein. Here, there is a short but steep climb to tackle. The route then continues with gentle ups and downs across the plateau before descending again to Teisendorf, situated at the foot of the Teisenberg (1,333 m). Following the Ramsaubach stream, the route continues without any major climbs, passing Höglwörther See and heading via Anger into the Rupertiwinkel region to Piding, near the Saalach River and Bad Reichenhall. From Piding, the route follows the Saalach to Bad Reichenhall, situated at the foot of the Lattengebirge and on the edge of the Untersberg National Park. From Bad Reichenhall, the route climbs towards Bayerisch Gmain and continues through the narrow valley between the Berchtesgadener Hochthron (1,972 m) and the Predigtstuhl (1,688 m), before reaching Berchtesgaden. From Berchtesgaden, it is only a short ride (approx. 30 minutes) to the final destination of the long-distance cycle route. Lake Königssee, located within the national park of the same name, is only about 6 km from the town of Berchtesgaden. Whether you cycle the final section today or leave it until the following morning to take your souvenir photo at the world-famous Königssee is entirely up to you.
