The trekking tour begins with a transfer to Bardo and leads to the summit of Mount Matajur, passing through some of the most significant sites of the Isonzo Front. Along trails immersed in nature, past trenches and traces of the First World War, the route continues to Kobarid, the site of the famous 1917 battle. Here, the landscape still preserves the memory of one of the most decisive events in European history.
The route continues uphill towards the Kolovrat ridge, following the old military tracks that once connected the front-line positions. On the ridge, we reach the Kolovrat Open-Air Museum, where restored trenches, communication trenches, tunnels and fortifications tell the story of soldiers’ lives and offer an immersive experience in one of the most important settings of the First World War. From here, spectacular views stretch from the Julian Alps all the way to the Adriatic Sea. In the afternoon a transfer will drive to Tribil.
From Tribil Superiore, the Walk of Peace trail follows the scenic ridge towards Castelmonte, passing through forests, high-altitude meadows and ancient mule tracks. The route offers beautiful views over the Natisone Valleys and leads to the Sanctuary of Castelmonte, one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites in Friuli Venezia Giulia. From here, descend to Prepotto, the destination for the day.
Today’s stage winds through the vineyards and gentle hills of Collio and Brda, crossing the border between Italy and Slovenia, an area once affected by the operations of the Isonzo Front. The trail leads to Šmartno (San Martino), a medieval village that preserves the memory of the conflict and offers sweeping views over the landscapes shaped by the First World War.
Today’s stage begins with a transfer to nearby Vrhovlje pri Kožbani, where the trekking route starts and crosses Mount Sabotin, a strategic location on the Isonzo Front. Here, the Peace Park Open-Air Museum preserves trenches, tunnels and testimonies of the soldiers who fought in the First World War. The trail descends towards Solkan and the bridge over the Isonzo River, before reaching Transalpina Square between Nova Gorica and Gorizia, a symbol of encounter between peoples and shared memory.
From Gorizia, a transfer takes you to Doberdò del Lago, the heart of the Isonzo Karst and a symbolic site of the First World War, where the karst lake, trenches and communication trenches tell the story of the Isonzo Front. From here, the trekking route winds through sinkholes, rocky terrain and typical karst vegetation to Malchina/Slivia. Those who wish can take an alternative route with a visit to the Redipuglia War Memorial, one of the most important sites of remembrance of the First World War.
The final stage of your tour starts in Malchina/Slivia and crosses the Trieste Karst along scenic trails to Aurisina and Prosecco, passing through karst landscapes, forests and viewpoints overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. The hike ends at Miramare Castle, overlooking the sea and surrounded by a beautiful historic park. From here, you can return to Trieste by public transport or by boat, enjoying views of the coastline from the sea.
