Hiking in the Sesto Dolomites

Day 2: Dobbiaco / Sillian – Carnic Ridge – Klammbachalm – Sesto (Ascent: approx. 400 m, descent: 1,100 m / approx. 14 km / approx. 4.5 hours) In the morning, you will take the cable car up to the famous ‘Helm’ ski mountain (ticket included). You will hike along the Carnic High Route, crossing the border between Italy and Austria several times along the way. From the Helm, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Sextner Dolomites mountain range. Several cosy mountain huts along this route invite you to stop for a break.

Day 3: Sesto circular tour Rotwandwiesen (Ascent approx. 680 m, descent approx. 680 m / approx. 16 km / approx. 5.5–6 hours or alternative route: ascent approx. 160 m, descent approx. 720 m / approx. 12 km / approx. 3.5 hours)
The stage takes you along a very scenic high trail that follows old war paths. From the Kreuzberg Pass, you follow a pleasant hiking trail through forests and meadows back to Sesto. Along the way, you have a beautiful view of the Karnischen Kamm and to the north, the peaks of the Rieserferner group. You have the option of shortening the stage right at the start by taking the Rotwand cable car (ticket not included). You can also shorten the stage by taking the public bus from the Kreuzberg Pass.

Day 4: Fishleintal – Three Peaks - Höhlensteintal (Ascent approx. 960 m, descent approx. 950 m / approx. 15 km / approx. 5.5–6 hours, or a shorter route to the Aurozo Hut: ascent approx. 990 m, descent approx. 160 m / approx. 11 km / approx. 4.5–5 hours.)

Starting from the Fischlein Valley, you hike below the Mount Paterno, which was fiercely contested during World War I (the legendary mountain guide Sepp Innerkofler lost his life here), heading towards the symbol of the Dolomites, the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site of the Three Peaks (Drei Zinnen) and the well-known Drei Zinnen Hut. Here begins the beautiful northern part of the hike, featuring the iconic view of the Three Peaks. From the Three Peaks, the route continues over the Rienzböden and the Rienztal to the Dreizinnenblick in the Höhlenstein Valley.

Day 5: Höhlensteintal – Plätzwiese - Braies (Ascent approx. 860 m, descent approx. 1050 m / approx. 19 km / approx. 6–7 hours or alternative route: ascent approx. 840 m, descent approx. 270 m / approx. 13.5 km / approx. 4 hours)

Along the Hell Valley, you hike uphill via an old World War I war path to Strudelkopf (Monte Specie) and then descend to the Plätzwiese. The route continues into the Braies Valley, your stage destination. Besides nature and tranquility, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Monte Cristallo, the Tofana, and the world-famous Three Peaks (Drei Zinnen). To reduce the descent elevation, you can shorten the route by taking the bus.
Day 6: Lake Braies round tour (Ascent approx. 160 m, descent approx. 450 m / approx. 12 km / approx. 3.5–4 hours or Rossalm variant: Ascent approx. 960 m, descent approx. 470 m / approx. 14 km / approx. 6–7 hours.)
The circular tour takes you to the idyllic Lake Braies, also known as the „Pearl of the Dolomite Lakes.“ The LAke Braies enchants its visitors, especially with its crystal-clear water. You will hike through the romantic area of the Fanes–Sennes–Prags Nature Park, which is one of the largest protected areas in South Tyrol.

Day 7: Altprags – Putzalm – Lake Toblach (Ascent: approx. 610 m, descent: approx. 820 m / approx. 9 km / approx. 3.5–4 hours or alternative route: ascent: approx. 650 m, descent: approx. 860 m / approx. 13.5 km / approx. 5.5–6 hours)

From Altprags, the walk leads through meadows and woods, surrounded by the stunning backdrop of the Pragser Dolomites, up to the Putzalm. This small alpine hut is a great place to stop for refreshments and serves up some delicious traditional dishes. You’ll walk below the Suiskopf, where the descent to Lake Toblach begins. You’ll enjoy a leisurely walk to Toblach. If you’re overnighting in Sillian, take the train from Toblach to Sillian.
Day 8: Departure Individual departure or possibility to extend the stay.

Eco friendly Option b y train: to Innsbruck via the Brenner Pass to Sillian or Franzensfeste. From here, on to the Upper Puster Valley. Timetables at: www.deutschebahn.de, www.oebb.at, www.trenitalia.com. By car: via the Brenner motorway (A22) to Brixen – take the Franzensfeste exit, Puster Valley – through the Puster Valley (SS49 state road) to Dobbiaco or Sillian, depending on your hotel, or via the Felbertauern Road to Lienz in East Tyrol and on to Italy into the Upper Puster Valley (Niederdorf or Dobbiaco, depending on your hotel). By plane: Low-cost flights to Treviso Airport or Venice Marco Polo Airport. Transfers from the airport to the starting point of the tour can be arranged upon request.
