Bike & Wine in South Tyrol

Trentino-South Tyrol - IT
  • From 1859 €
  • Holiday type Bicycle holiday
  • Duration 8 days
  • Difficulty Level Easy

During this round trip through South Tyrol along well-developed cycling paths, you will get to know everything that makes this small region so unique and special: pristine nature with rushing rivers, legendary mountains, and idyllic lakes, living customs, and cultivated culture in a land whose history has left many traces. The cycling tour takes you on paths from the eastern Puster Valley and the Dolomites to the provincial capital Bolzano, to Lake Caldaro, and the spa town of Merano. Besides nature and culture, you will immerse yourself in the tradition of viticulture and wine production that shape this rich region. A detour to Tramin, the home of the wine by the same name, is a must.

This cycling tour is suitable for everyone. In recent years, the cycling network in South Tyrol‘s valleys has been very well developed. Although South Tyrol is especially known for its unique mountain scenery, you will find many easy, flat valley bike paths without major climbs here. This tour is also suitable for families with children from 14 years old.

Day 1: Arrival

Individual arrival at the hotel in Bressanone.

Day 2: Brixen/Bressanone – Bozen/Bolzano

(approx. 40 km)

The Eisack Valley bike path from Brixen to Bolzano along the Eisack River sets your direction today. The starting point is the bishop’s town of Brixen, which you leave heading south. Soon the picturesque town of Klausen with its narrow streets and houses invites you for a first visit. Finally, you will reach Bolzano, South Tyrol’s provincial capital, a city where two cultures meet.

Day 3: Bozen/Bolzano - Meran/Merano

(approx. 35-40 km)

Along the “Wine Road,” you cross the largest fruit-growing area of South Tyrol, where one orchard follows another – here comes the famous South Tyrolean apple. The oldest winery in South Tyrol, located in Andrian, is also on your way. You continue through Terlan and Nals to the municipality of Lana, definitely worth a visit, before arriving in the spa town of Merano. The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, located a bit above Merano, are also worth seeing. Alternatively, you can cycle along the Adige bike path directly to Merano.

Day 4: Meran/Merano - Vinschgau / Mals – Meran/Merano

(approx. 60 km)

The Vinschgau railway takes you from Merano to Mals. By bike, you explore the entire valley gently downhill along the Adige bike path. Your first stop is Glurns, South Tyrol’s smallest town. Then you continue through the fruit-growing area to Prad, Laas, Schlanders, and Naturns, returning to the spa town of Merano.

Day 5: Meran/Merano - Eppan/Appiano

(approx. 45 km)

Today’s stage starts in Merano. From the city center, you follow the bike path along the Adige (part of the famous Via Claudia Augusta) cycling gently downhill along the river, surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. You pass through typical villages where you can take a break to taste local wines or visit a winery. The final section leads to Lake Caldaro, a gem amidst the vineyards known for its mild climate and swim-friendly water.

Day 6: Eppan/Appiano - Tramin - Eppan/Appiano

(approx. 30 km)

The South Tyrolean Wine Road: a tip for every wine lover and connoisseur. Picturesque vineyards and fascinating landscapes accompany you on your route today. Enjoy the wonderful view from Altenburg over the entire wine-growing region. The largest wineries in the region and many well-known wine producers are located here.

Day 7: Eppan/Appiano - Brixen/Bressanone

(approx. 60-65 km)

Your last stage begins in Appiano, one of the most symbolic places on the Wine Road. After leaving the lake behind, you cycle down a side road into the valley toward Bolzano, passing vineyards and small villages. Along the Eisack Valley bike path, which connects Bolzano with Brixen along the Eisack River, you reach Brixen, the final destination of your cycling tour.
