Alpe Adria Tour variant across Slovenia: from Villach to Trieste
The Alpe Adria Cycle Trail across Slovenia has a lot to offer, beautiful natural landscapes and many worth visiting towns.
After a short detour to the Italian border town of Tarvis, you will cycle on to Slovenia. You will reach the fairytale Lake Bled at the foot of the Julian Alps. On this bike tour from the mountains to the sea, you will get to visit Villach, Taris, Bled, Ljubljana, Postojna, Lipizza and Trieste. You will also discover the world-famous stalactite caves of Postojna and Lipizza- the place where the Lipizzaner horses are bred and many other great towns, places and sights. On the last day you cycle to the former Habsburg port city of Trieste.
The tour from Villach to Trieste goes along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape. The tour is suitable for children over 14 years.
TRAVEL ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival at Villach
Individual arrival at the starting-hotel in Villach.
Day 2: Villach – Tarvisio
(approx. 40 km)
Following the river Gail surrounded by a fabulous mountain scenery, you leave Villach behind you and also say goodbye to Austria. The ambient noise is absorbed by the trees and you enjoy quiet idyllic pictures all around. The well-maintained cycle path climbs up to the border: Servus Österreich, Ciao Bella Italia! The first gelato is already waiting for you.
Day 3: Tarvisio - Bled
(approx. 55 km)
You will reach the Italian state border and continue on the cycle path. Soon you leave Italy again and enter Slovenia. Passing the well-known ski resort of Kranjska Gora, the cycle path leads through the beautiful and largely untouched natural landscape of Slovenia. Possibility of shortcut by train (about 10 km and a few metres in altitude). You will spend the evening at the romantic lake of Bled.
Day 4: Bled - Ljubljana
(approx. 55 km)
Today you cycle from Bled to Ljubljana, which has been the „European Green Capital“ since 2016. You cycle through Radovljica, a medieval town with a moat and views of the Karavanks and Julian Alps. You will also cycle through Kranj, the capital of the Slovenian Alps and the centre of the Gorenjska region in Slovenia. The old town of Kranj is one of the most beautiful in the country and home to culture and tradition. You will spend the evening in Ljubljana. The city‘s landmark, the Dragon Bridge, is a must-see.
Day 5: Ljubljana - Postojna
(approx. 60km)
You leave the capital Ljubljana and cycle through idyllic and picturesque villages on quiet roads surrounded by fields, green hills and farms through the town of Logatec to Postojna. The highlight of today the Postojna Cave, the second largest stalactite cave in the world. It is the only karst cave with a cave railway that has been operational for 140 years. During a 1.5-hour guided tour, this „cave train“ will take you into the network of underground passages, galleries and halls.
Day 6: Postojna - Lipizza
(approx. 50 km)
Today your cycle trip takes you from Postojna to Lipizza (Lipica), home of the noble white horses. Lipizzaner horses have been bred here since 1580. These horses became famous through the Vienna Riding School. On the way, you cycle through Pivka, where the Park of Pivka‘s Military History is located. Here you can get a unique insight into Slovenian and world history.
Day 7: Lipizza – Trieste
(approx. 30km)
On the last day you cycle to the former Habsburg port city of Trieste. Near Pesek is located the beautiful Val Rosandra. You cycle along the former railway line of the narrow-gauge railway „Parenzana“. On this last stage, you hardly have to cycle any higher, you will cycle gently downhill towards the sea.
Day 8: Departure
Individual departure or possibility to extend your stay on the Adriatic Sea.
