The starting point of this bike tour is Spittal a. Drau. Soon, however, it is time to say goodbye to Austria, before the cycling tour continues in Italy. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region not only offers a variety of landscapes, but also invites you on a journey through the cultural diversity of the region.
This mix of cultures is also reflected in the kitchen: Alpine-Austrian, Slovenian and Venetian influences characterise the gastronomic offer of the region. Leaving the peaks of the Carnic Alps far behind, you will cycle towards the sea on the southern side of the Alps. In front of you the Adriatic coast will stretch with miles of sandy beaches.
The tour from Villach to Trieste is an easy tour. It goes along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape.
TRAVEL ITINERARY
5 days / 4 nights
Day 1
Individual arrival at the hotel in Spittal an der Drau. Parking place available close to the hotel.
Day 2
(approx. 70 km)
You cycle along the Drautal cycle path from Spittal an der Drau to Villach and then continue on the R3 to Feistritz an der Gail. You can shorten the route by going from Villach to Arnoldstein or to Nötsch by train (train ticket not included). From Nötsch it just about 2.5 km to Feistritz an der Gail.
Day 3
(approx. 70 km)
You start your tour on the cycle path R3 until Draschitz and turn right towards Thörl/Maglern, then you will join the official Alpe Adria cycle path again.
Day 4
(approx. 60 km)
The little city of Gemona del Friuli which is located on the southern exit of the valley “Kanaltal” and on the foothills of the Julian Alps is one of the most beautiful historic towns of the region. The townscape is characterised by the majestic cathedral “Santa Maria Assunta” which is certainly worth a visit. The wine determines today’s stage. Hills full of grapevines line your path and invite you to taste some good wines. The Venetian influenced Udine exudes calm and prudence. Enjoy a cup of coffee on the “Piazza” or stroll through the city centre and admire important Gothic and Renaissance buildings.
Day 5
(approx. 55 km)
Accompanied by the breeze of the Scirocco, you glide past reed inlets and canals and reach Grado, a historic fishing town and one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic.
Day 6
Individual departure or possibility to extend your stay on the Adriatic Sea.

From the East: Southern Highway (A2) Wien - Graz - Klagenfurt - Villach - Spittal/Drau; or from Villach to the Gegendtal to Radenthein/Döbriach - Millstätter lake.
From the South: Highway Udine - Tarvisio - Villach - Spittal/Drau; or from Villach to the Gegendtal to Radenthein/Döbriach - Millstätter lake.
From the West: Innsbruck - Felbertauernstraße or highway Brennerautobahn/Pustertal to Lienz - Oberdrauburg - Spittal/Drau
From the North:München - Salzburg - Tauernautobahn (A10) direction Spittal/Drau until exit Millstätter lake.
By train

By plane
From the Klagenfurt airport You can reach Villach by train in about 30 – 40 minutes. Good train connections to Spittal an der Drau.
Between the airport and the main station of Klagenfurt runs buses and also tram. You can also take a shuttle service directly from the airport to Villach. www.klagenfurt-airport.com, www.touristik-kaernten-transfer.at.
